Tanzania — Transport & Getting Around
Dar es Salaam runs the DART bus rapid transit (fares under TZS 1,000) plus dala-dala minibuses — cheap but crowded and pickpocket-prone. Bajaji (tuk-tuks) handle short hops; agree the fare before boarding. Bolt and Uber both operate in Dar es Salaam and are the sane option at night. Azam Marine fast ferries link Dar and Zanzibar in roughly 1.5-2 hours, several sailings daily — buy tickets at the official counter, not from touts on the dock.
Domestic flying is the practical way to cover distance: Air Tanzania, Precision Air, Coastal Aviation and Auric Air connect Dar (DAR), Zanzibar (ZNZ), Kilimanjaro (JRO), Arusha and the safari strips. The new standard-gauge railway runs Dar es Salaam-Dodoma. Long-distance buses are cheap but the accident record is poor; avoid overnight departures.
