Tanzania — Neighborhoods

Sex work is illegal in Tanzania under the Penal Code as amended by the Sexual Offences Special Provisions Act 1998, and this should frame any reading of the nightlife. Dar es Salaam — the Masaki and Oyster Bay peninsula holds the upscale bars, lounges and hotel nightlife where expats and visitors congregate; a freelance scene exists around late-night venues, but police sweeps and set-ups targeting foreigners for extortion are a documented risk. Arusha — a smaller safari-crowd bar scene around the city centre. Zanzibar — Stone Town plus the Nungwi and Paje beach strips have tourist bars, but the islands are conservative and Muslim-majority; discretion in dress and behaviour outside resort grounds is expected.

Same-sex conduct is criminalised with penalties up to life imprisonment (Penal Code s.154), enforcement has intensified since 2016, and entrapment via dating apps has been reported — this is one of the highest-risk jurisdictions in this guide for LGBT travellers.
