Tanzania — Currency & Money

The Tanzanian shilling (TZS) is the street currency; US dollars are widely accepted for safaris, hotels and visas but notes must be clean, unmarked and printed 2009 or later. ATMs from the major banks work with foreign cards in Dar, Arusha, Zanzibar town and other cities — carry cash beyond them. Card acceptance is limited to upscale hotels and restaurants, often with a 3-5% surcharge.

Tipping is entrenched in the safari sector (commonly US 0-20 per day for guides, less for camp staff); in urban bars and restaurants 5-10% or rounding up is appreciated but not enforced.
