Serbia — Transport & Getting Around

Belgrade abolished fares on its city buses, trams and trolleybuses on 1 January 2025 — public transport in the capital is simply free, no ticket needed. Taxis are the main hazard: airport and station touts overcharge brutally, so use the CarGo app (the local Uber equivalent) or Yandex Go, or order a licensed radio taxi by phone. From Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) the A1 minibus and bus 72 run to the centre cheaply; if you take a taxi, use the official desk in arrivals, which issues a fixed-price voucher by zone — never accept a ride offered inside the terminal.

The Soko high-speed train reaches Novi Sad from Belgrade Centre station in 36 minutes for a few euros (book via Srbija Voz). Intercity buses cover Niš and the rest of the country; domestic flights are essentially pointless.
