San Juan is the easiest Caribbean city to get around: Uber operates island-wide and is the default (Lyft does not operate); white "taxi turístico" cabs run fixed zone fares from the airport — roughly 0 to Isla Verde, 5 to Condado, 9-22 to Old San Juan, plus small bag and night surcharges. The Tren Urbano metro ( .50) links Bayamón and Santurce but misses the tourist beachfront; AMA buses (75¢) are slow and sparse. Old San Juan is walkable and has a free trolley.

For Vieques and Culebra, cheap public ferries leave from Ceiba on the east coast (a -4.50 crossing, but a 1-hour drive from San Juan — reserve online, they sell out) or 8-25-minute flights on Vieques Air Link and Cape Air from SJU or the smaller Isla Grande airport. Renting a car is near-essential for Rincón, Ponce and the west coast; traffic in metro San Juan is heavy and parking in Old San Juan scarce.
