Puerto Rico — Currency & Money
The US dollar, with US banking and US prices. Cards and contactless work virtually everywhere in metro San Juan; locals also use ATH Móvil, an island payment app you will see at food kiosks — cash covers you where it appears. Keep some cash for chinchorros (roadside food stands), small-town spots and during the power outages the grid still suffers, when card terminals die. ATMs are ubiquitous; standard US out-of-network fees apply.
Tipping is fully American: 18-20% in restaurants, -2 a drink at bars, 15-20% on taxis and Uber. Hotels add resort fees and an accommodation tax on top of quoted rates — read the booking breakdown. No currency exchange needed for US visitors; others should treat it exactly like a US city for budgeting.
