Japan's adult scene is heavily regulated and generally low-crime, but foreigner-targeted overcharging and drink-spiking scams in Tokyo's Kabukicho and Roppongi nightlife districts are a persistent, well-documented risk that has drawn repeated US and UK embassy warnings.

Kabukicho bottakuri (rip-off) bars via street touts
Touts (kyakuhiki) on the streets of Kabukicho in Shinjuku steer foreign men into small upstairs bars, girls bars or 'snack' bars advertising a cheap set price, then present bills of tens or hundreds of thousands of yen with fabricated charges for seat fees, service fees, and hostess drinks. Groups of men typically block the exit until payment or an ATM run is made.
Mitigation: Never follow a street tout anywhere in Kabukicho; enter only venues you found independently with a clearly posted, itemised price list and photograph it before ordering.
Roppongi and Kabukicho drink-spiking with card fraud
The US Embassy in Tokyo has issued repeated warnings about drinks being spiked in Roppongi and Kabukicho bars and clubs; victims wake hours later missing large sums via forced ATM withdrawals or find their credit card charged for tens of thousands of dollars in unrecognised bar tabs. Incidents have involved both hostess-style venues and mainstream nightclubs.
Mitigation: Keep your drink in sight at all times, refuse drinks bought by strangers or hostesses, and set low daily withdrawal and contactless limits on any card you carry out at night.
'Free' or fixed-price shows that escalate on the bill
Touts advertise a girls bar, cabaret or 'show pub' at a headline rate of a few thousand yen but the actual venue charges nomination fees, per-song fees, hostess-drink fees and a table charge that only appear at checkout. Refusing to pay is met with intimidation, threats to call police (who in practice tend to treat the dispute as civil), or being walked to a nearby ATM.
Mitigation: Assume any price quoted by a tout is a lure; insist on a written menu with all fees before you sit, and if you are already inside walk out the moment additional charges are mentioned.
Deriheru (delivery health) card-terminal overcharge
Some outcall (deriheru) operators quote a set course price by phone, then on arrival at the hotel add 'transport,' 'nomination,' 'hotel entry' and 'extension' fees, and run the card for a much larger total or repeatedly swipe a portable terminal. Disputes are difficult because the service itself falls in a legal grey area.
Mitigation: Use only operators with a fully itemised English price list on their website, pay in cash for the exact quoted amount, and never hand over your card to a portable reader.
English 'nightlife guide' sites that are tout fronts
Several English-language Tokyo and Osaka nightlife directories and 'best bars in Kabukicho' blogs are operated by or paid by the same clip-joint networks, funnelling foreign visitors into the exact bottakuri bars the police and embassies warn about. Reviews are uniformly positive and phone numbers route to a dispatcher who sends a tout to meet you.
Mitigation: Cross-check any recommended venue against the Tokyo Metropolitan Police bottakuri warning list and recent Google Maps reviews in Japanese, not just English.
Fake 'plainclothes officer' shakedowns near Kabukicho
Occasional reports describe men in suits approaching foreigners leaving adult venues in Shinjuku or Ikebukuro, flashing a badge-style ID and demanding to see a passport and wallet for a 'drug check,' then palming cash. Real Japanese police in uniform will escort you to the nearest koban (police box) rather than search you on the street.
Mitigation: Politely refuse any street search, ask to walk together to the visible koban on the corner, and call 110 if the person resists.
