Why Fortaleza matters
Fortaleza, capital of Ceará, has been Brazil's most prominent adult-tourism destination for two decades. Iracema Beach (Praia de Iracema) and the surrounding district host an active scene of beach-bar pickup, club-and-termas culture, and outcall escorts. Costs are far below Rio or São Paulo: short-time encounters R$150–300 (≈ US$30–60), termas entry R$50–80.
Legal status — local reality
Brazil's federal law: selling sex is legal at age 18+, but pimping, brothel-keeping, and trafficking are illegal. Termas operate in legal grey areas — technically clubs/bars, with workers as "independent." Police corruption and selective enforcement are real. Client legal risk is low for adults; severe (federal trafficking charges) for any encounter with a minor.
Named venues & areas
Termas (sauna-clubs)
- Termas Hollywood (Iracema area) — Long-running, well-known.
- Termas Pleiades — Mid-tier termas, popular with locals.
- Several smaller termas in Aldeota and Praia do Futuro districts.
Beach-bar circuit
- Ponte dos Ingleses / Ponte Metálica — The historic adult-tourism strip. Bars and small clubs along the beachfront.
- Praia de Iracema generally — Most adult-tourism activity is here.
Clubs
- Several pickup-style clubs in Aldeota and Iracema. Brazilian "garota de programa" (escort) culture is direct — solicitation in clubs is common.
Neighbourhoods
- Iracema — Tourist core; most hotels; most adult activity.
- Aldeota — Upscale residential; premium independents and some clubs.
- Mucuripe & Praia do Futuro — Beach-strip extending east; mixed.
- Centro — Avoid at night; mugging risk.
Scams & risks
- Drink-spiking on Iracema — Real, recurring. Watch your drink. Carry only what you intend to spend.
- Hotel-room theft — Hire only verified providers; budget hotels see opportunistic theft.
- Police shakedowns — Rare but real. Carry only a copy of your passport, not the original. Carry only the cash you need.
- Underage workers — Federal trafficking charges. Always verify ID. If in doubt, walk away.
Practical notes
- Portuguese — even basic — helps significantly. Many providers speak no English.
- Cash (BRL) only. Cards are unsafe to hand over in adult settings.
- Uber works well; safer than street taxis.
- Avoid the favela areas of Pirambu, Bom Jardim, and parts of Vicente Pinzón at night.
