Three different things called "live show"

Legitimate cabaret — staged productions with topless dancing, occasional nudity, but no explicit sex. Moulin Rouge, Lido, Crazy Horse Paris, Friedrichstadt-Palast Berlin, Las Vegas Cirque-adjacent. Tourist-attraction tier; €100–250+ per ticket; dinner-show formats common.
Neo-burlesque — independent performer-led shows revived since the 2000s; comedic, theatrical, sometimes erotic-themed but rarely explicit. Performer-tier venues; £30–80 per ticket. Olivia White, House of Burlesque, Dita Von Teese tours.
Explicit live shows — Bangkok ping-pong / live show, Amsterdam Casa Rosso, certain Las Vegas adult cabarets, Hamburg Reeperbahn shows. Explicit content; pricing wildly variable; scam-density high.

Mixing these up costs tourists thousands of euros / dollars annually. The most-common mistake: buying a "live show" ticket in Bangkok or Hamburg expecting Moulin-Rouge-tier cabaret and getting an explicit-content scam venue with €500 bills.

Legitimate cabaret venues

Paris

Moulin Rouge — the global cabaret reference. Two shows nightly, dinner-show or show-only options. €90–230 depending on package. Topless dancing as featured tradition, no explicit content. Tourist-attraction tier; book ahead.
Lido — closed 2022 after 76 years; the building reopened 2024 under different management as Lido 2 Paris, still cabaret-format.
Crazy Horse Paris — more art-nouveau, less production-spectacle than Moulin Rouge. €100–180.
Paradis Latin — long-running French cabaret, more local clientele than Moulin Rouge.

Berlin

Friedrichstadt-Palast — the largest stage in Europe; full-production cabaret-revue format; technically art rather than adult cabaret. €40–150.
Wintergarten Variete — smaller variete-format venue.
Tipi am Kanzleramt — cabaret + dinner.

Las Vegas

Cirque du Soleil shows — multiple Las Vegas residencies; not explicitly adult but several (KÀ, Mystère, Zumanity) had adult-themed elements.
Zumanity (closed 2020) was the explicitly-adult Cirque show.
Absinthe — Spiegeltent variete; adult comedy + circus; $90–250.
Magic Mike Live — male revue; female-audience-targeted.

London

Windmill Theatre — historic adult-revue venue; now a strip club rather than cabaret.

Neo-burlesque

Revival movement since the late 1990s; performer-led; theatrical; sometimes erotic but rarely explicit. Pricing: £25–80 typical. Major performers and tours:

House of Burlesque, Olivia White — UK collective.
NYC: Slipper Room, Duane Park — long-running burlesque venues.

Explicit live shows — major locations

Amsterdam

Casa Rosso — long-running De Wallen explicit-live-show venue. Multi-act format. €50–80 cover; drinks separate. The most-famous Amsterdam explicit-show option; relatively low-scam compared to Bangkok equivalents.
Banana Bar — bar with adjacent show.
Sexyland and smaller venues — vary in legitimacy.

Bangkok — ping-pong shows and live shows

Bangkok\'s explicit-show culture concentrates in Patpong and parts of Soi Cowboy. Two warnings before considering:

The "ping-pong show" tourist trap. Standard scam: street tout offers "free entry, just drinks"; you sit down; drinks billed at ฿1,000+ each; surprise bill at exit ฿5,000–20,000. Documented for decades. Several embassy warnings. Default: do not enter any ping-pong show via street tout.
Performer exploitation. The economic structure of explicit Bangkok live shows is more exploitative than Bangkok\'s go-go bar industry; performers earn substantially less; trafficking concerns are higher.

If you\'re going to attend at all: known-name venues only (King\'s Castle, Super Pussy — verify current operation); confirm pricing in writing at the door; cap your drink consumption.

Hamburg Reeperbahn

Hamburg\'s historic adult district has live-show venues mixed with the FKK saunaclub and Laufhaus formats. Long-running venues operate legitimately; tourist-targeted smaller venues have similar scam patterns to Bangkok ping-pong shows. The famous Herbertstrasse isn\'t a live show — it\'s the historic licensed-window street.

Las Vegas adult cabarets

Vegas live-show culture is mostly Cirque-style or Magic-Mike-style revue. Explicit shows are limited. The strip clubs (Sapphire, Spearmint Rhino) host stage performances throughout the night; the show is the dancers, not a separate ticketed event.

Buying tickets safely

Book legitimate cabaret online ahead — Moulin Rouge, Crazy Horse, Cirque, etc. all sell direct tickets at fixed prices.
Neo-burlesque: buy direct from performer or venue — community-organised events, established box-office tickets.
For explicit shows: known venue only, in writing on pricing. Casa Rosso publishes its cover. Bangkok known venues post drink prices on entry.
Refuse street touts. "Free entry" almost always isn\'t. The pricing scam is the entire business model.
Pay with credit card where possible — chargeback option if scammed.
Carry only the cash you intend to spend. Don\'t go in with €1,000 in your wallet hoping to leave with €900.

Who attends what

Legitimate cabaret — tourists, dinner-show clientele, occasional locals on special occasions. Couples, mixed groups, all-female parties (Magic Mike). Mostly a tourist-attraction.
Neo-burlesque — local community + occasional travelling fans; younger, art-scene-adjacent demographic; LGBT-friendly.
Explicit shows — solo male tourists predominantly; some couples; occasional female-only groups. Demographic skews older male than the neo-burlesque audience.

Etiquette inside cabaret venues

Dress for the venue — Moulin Rouge, Lido, Crazy Horse have light dress codes (smart casual minimum). Showing up in flip-flops gets refused at the door.
No photography during shows. Universal.
Drinks ordered with the dinner package are included; à la carte premium drinks add up.
Tip the host / waitstaff — 10–15% standard at legitimate venues.
No interaction with performers beyond audience-performer banter during the show.

What a Moulin Rouge night actually is

Reality check: Moulin Rouge is a tourist-attraction first, an adult-cabaret second. The show is genuinely good — high-production-value, professional dance, technically erotic but rarely sexualised in a way that surprises a contemporary audience. The dinner is mediocre tourist-restaurant fare. The "experience" component is the location and history, not the content of the show. Repeat-visitors are uncommon; the venue is built for one-time tourist transactions. Pricing reflects the tourist-attraction tier ($120–280 USD per person depending on package).

Adjacent formats worth knowing

Drag shows — different audience and cultural context; not adult cabaret in the traditional sense. Vegas, NYC, London all have notable drag scenes.
