Uruguay — Transport & Getting Around

Montevideo has no metro; the STM bus network is extensive and safe by regional standards (pay with an STM card or cash on board). Taxis run sealed meters; Uber and Cabify operate legally in Montevideo and are usually cheaper. Distances are small — much of the visitor city is walkable along the Rambla in daylight.

Carrasco airport (MVD) lies about 19 km east of the centre: official airport taxis and remises take 25-35 minutes, with cheaper COT and city buses available. Domestic flights are effectively irrelevant; comfortable coaches from Tres Cruces terminal reach Punta del Este in about 2 hours and Colonia in 3. Buquebus and Colonia Express ferries connect Buenos Aires directly.
