Trinidad & Tobago — Insurance
Take out travel insurance that explicitly covers crime-related loss and medical evacuation; Trinidad's public hospitals (Port of Spain General, San Fernando) treat emergencies free of charge but are overstretched, and private clinics in the St Clair/Woodbrook area expect card or cash on admission. Serious cases are sometimes evacuated to Miami. Check that your policy is not voided by any government travel advisory in force — several insurers exclude areas under state-of-emergency notices, and T&T has had them.
HIV prevalence is higher than the Caribbean average; free HIV/STI testing is available through public health facilities and NGO clinics in Port of Spain, and private labs offer same-day panels for a fee. Condoms are sold in every pharmacy. If you need PEP after an exposure, go to a major public hospital A&E promptly — the 72-hour window applies.
