Senegal — Neighborhoods

Senegal is the rare African jurisdiction where sex work is legal and state-regulated, under a registration system dating to 1969: workers must be at least 21, register with the health authorities and carry a sanitary card (carnet sanitaire) tied to mandatory health checks. Public soliciting, unregistered work, pimping and brothel-keeping remain criminal, so in practice the legal scene is discreet and much activity happens outside the registered system. Dakar — Les Almadies is the main upscale nightlife district (clubs and lounges along the corniche and around the Ngor area), with the Plateau downtown holding older bars and hotel venues; freelance contact concentrates around nightclubs late. Saly / Mbour — the Petite Côte resort strip is the area most associated with sex tourism, centred on beach bars and hotel nightlife.

Same-sex acts are criminalised under Penal Code article 319 (up to five years) and social hostility is severe; LGBT travellers should treat Senegal as a no-visibility environment regardless of the regulated status of heterosexual sex work.
