Russia — Legal Help

Prostitution is an administrative offence under Article 6.11 of the Code of Administrative Offences (fine RUB 1,500–2,000); organising, pimping or running a brothel is criminal under Articles 240–241 of the Criminal Code (up to 6 years). Age of consent is 16 (Article 134 UK RF); sex with anyone under 18 in exchange for money is a separate criminal offence. Drug laws under Article 228 are extremely severe — possession of small amounts of cannabis can carry multi-year sentences, as the Brittney Griner case showed.

If detained, invoke your Vienna Convention right to consular access immediately. US, UK, Canadian and Australian embassies in Moscow operate with heavily reduced staff since 2022 — consular help is slow and limited; do not expect intervention on drug charges.

Embassies & consular help

If you are detained, ask police to notify your embassy — they can provide a lawyer list and consular visits, but cannot pay fees or intervene in the case.
