Portugal — Currency & Money

Portugal uses the euro (EUR). Cards — including contactless and Apple/Google Pay — are accepted almost everywhere in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, though small tascas, older pensões and rural cafés may still be cash-only. Multibanco is the domestic ATM network; withdrawals from Multibanco machines are free with EU cards but foreign-card fees run EUR 2–5 plus your bank's markup. Avoid Euronet ATMs in tourist zones, which offer poor dynamic-conversion rates.

Tipping is modest: rounding up or leaving 5–10% in restaurants is normal, EUR 1–2 for taxi drivers and hotel porters. Service charges are rarely added. Small couvert bread/olive plates at the start of a meal are optional — you can wave them away without offence.
