Warsaw Old Town strip-club tout trap
English-speaking touts on Nowy Świat, Krakowskie Przedmieście and the Old Town Market Square (Rynek Starego Miasta) steer tourists into upstairs 'gentlemen's clubs' where a single drink for a hostess is billed at 500-2,000 PLN and the final tab runs into the thousands of euros. Both the US Embassy in Warsaw and UK FCDO have issued repeat warnings about this specific pattern.
Mitigation: Never follow a street promoter to any venue — pick clubs yourself from independent reviews and confirm every price in writing before ordering.
Card held hostage until inflated bill is paid
Once the bill lands, staff refuse to return your credit card or passport, block the exit with bouncers, and escort refusers to an ATM to withdraw the disputed amount. Chargebacks are routinely defeated because you 'signed' the slip under duress.
Mitigation: Pay cash only in adult venues, carry a strict spending limit, and never hand a card or ID to bar staff for a 'tab'.
Menu prices in euros, not zloty — or hidden 'hostess drink' surcharge
Krakow (Rynek Główny, Kazimierz) and Warsaw clip joints print menus where the small print reads EUR instead of PLN, or where any drink bought for a hostess triggers a four-figure 'company' fee not shown on the list. The receipt itemises services you never ordered.
Mitigation: Photograph the full menu including footnotes before ordering and refuse to buy any drink for a woman who joins your table uninvited.
Roksa.pl and copycat listings with swapped women
Poland's dominant escort directory Roksa (and its many mirror sites) hosts profiles where the woman who arrives is visibly different from the photos, or where an 'agency' dispatcher upsells services on arrival that were promised on the phone. Photo theft from OnlyFans and Russian sites is widespread.
Mitigation: Do a reverse image search on the profile photos before booking and agree the exact price and services by message, not by voice call.
Drink-spiking around Warsaw Praga and Krakow's Kazimierz
Solo men picked up by 'freelancers' in bars near Ząbkowska (Praga) or around Plac Nowy in Kazimierz have reported waking hours later in their hotel with wallet, phone and watch gone; benzodiazepines in a topped-up drink are the usual method.
Mitigation: Keep your drink in hand or covered, and never let a new acquaintance order or fetch a round for you.
Fake plainclothes 'tourist police' checking wallets
Near Warsaw Central Station and Krakow's Main Square, men in plain clothes flash a badge, claim to be checking for counterfeit currency or drug money after you leave an adult venue, and skim cash or card details while 'inspecting' your wallet.
Mitigation: Real Polish police wear uniform for street checks — insist on walking to the nearest komisariat before handing over anything, and dial 112 if they refuse.
