Carry standard travel medical cover; the public health system is weak, and the private sanatorios of Asunción — where any serious problem should be taken — expect cash or card upfront. Dengue is endemic and epidemic in wet-season summers, so repellent is a health measure rather than a comfort item; check whether yellow-fever vaccination is advised for your itinerary.

HIV and STI testing runs free through PRONASIDA (the national HIV/STI programme) clinics and cheaply at private laboratories in Asunción. Pharmacies are plentiful and sell condoms without issue.
