Nigeria — Currency & Money

The naira (NGN) was floated in 2023 and has been volatile since, trading in the region of 1,400-1,700 to the dollar through 2024-25 — check current rates on arrival. This is a cash-heavy economy for visitors: foreign cards are frequently declined, ATM withdrawal limits are low, and card fraud risk is real, so bring crisp US 00 bills and exchange at banks, hotel desks or licensed bureau de change operators — never street changers. Count every stack.

Locals pay by transfer and POS everywhere, but that infrastructure mostly doesn't work with foreign cards. Small-note tipping ('dash') is customary for porters, drivers and service staff.
