Morocco — Legal Help
Article 490 of the 1962 Penal Code criminalises extramarital sex (1 month – 1 year); Article 489 criminalises same-sex acts (6 months – 3 years); Articles 498–500 criminalise sex work and procuring. Age of consent is 18 (Article 484). Enforcement against foreigners is uneven but real — hotels are required to record marital status, and prosecutions of visitors have followed complaints. If detained, ask immediately for consular access under the Vienna Convention.
Most embassies are in Rabat (US, UK, Canada, Australia via British High Commission, most EU). Cannabis (kif) is grown in the Rif but recreational use remains illegal under Law 13-21 (2021 legalised only medical/industrial cultivation); other drugs carry multi-year sentences. English-speaking lawyers can be arranged through your embassy's shortlist.
Embassies & consular help
If you are detained, ask police to notify your embassy — they can provide a lawyer list and consular visits, but cannot pay fees or intervene in the case.
