Fake police shakedowns
Real and fake officers stop foreigners and demand cash "fines" for fictional infractions. Tijuana and CDMX historic district worst.
Mitigation: Demand a citation in writing and to be taken to the station; offer to pay at the station only.
Zona Norte room-fee surprise
After a session, "manager" or extra fees appear that weren't in the original quote.
Mitigation: Confirm ALL fees (room, time, services) at the front desk before going up; pay per-session not per-tab.
ATM skimming at non-bank ATMs
Free-standing ATMs in tourist zones (Cancún, Playa del Carmen) frequently have skimmers.
Mitigation: Bank-attached ATMs only.
