Practical Notes
- PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) must be started within 72 hours of a high-risk exposure. Sooner is better; under 24 hours is best. Most major-city ERs will dispense.
- Window periods matter: HIV antibody tests need 4–6 weeks for reliable results post-exposure; gen-4 antigen/antibody combo tests work from 2 weeks. Re-test at 90 days for definitive negative.
- Anonymous testing is available at clinics tagged with that service — useful when documentation in your medical record matters.
- Bring your prescription if travelling on PrEP — most countries allow personal-use 30-day supply with documentation.
