Latvia — Legal Help

Emergency number 112; municipal police also patrol the Old Town. If you are detained, you have EU-guaranteed rights to an interpreter and a lawyer before questioning — ask for both, and for consular notification. Embassies can supply English-speaking lawyer lists and monitor your welfare but cannot get you released or pay legal bills. For strip-club bill fraud, police reports rarely go anywhere; the practical remedy is an immediate chargeback dispute with your card issuer, so pay by card, never settle an inflated bill in cash under pressure, and keep every receipt.

The age of consent in Latvia is 16, but paying anyone under 18 for sex is a criminal offence regardless. Selling sex is legal for the worker under the 2008 regulations; organising, pimping or providing premises are crimes, and clients are not criminalised for adult, consensual transactions.

Embassies & consular help

If you are detained, ask police to notify your embassy — they can provide a lawyer list and consular visits, but cannot pay fees or intervene in the case.
