Kenya — Transport & Getting Around

In Nairobi use ride-hail for everything: Uber, Bolt and the Kenyan app Little are cheap (short city hops often the equivalent of a few dollars) and door-to-door matters here — walking after dark is the single biggest avoidable risk. Matatus (minibuses) are the local backbone but come with pickpocketing and chaotic driving. The Madaraka Express SGR train runs Nairobi-Mombasa twice daily in about six hours (economy roughly KES 1,500; book ahead online or via M-Pesa). Domestic carriers Jambojet and Kenya Airways connect Nairobi with the coast, and Safarilink and others fly safari strips out of Wilson Airport.

Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) is the main hub, about 18 km from the Nairobi CBD — use the official taxi ranks or order an app car from the parking area. For Diani Beach, flying to Ukunda airstrip beats the Likoni ferry crawl from Mombasa (MBA).
