The Jordanian dinar (JOD) is pegged to the dollar at about USD 1.41 per dinar, and Jordan is markedly more expensive than travellers expect — closer to southern Europe than to Egypt. Cards work in Amman's malls, hotels and better restaurants; keep cash for taxis, small shops and everything outside the capital. ATMs are everywhere in Amman and Aqaba but foreign-card fees add up, so make fewer, larger withdrawals.

Tipping runs about 10% in restaurants (check whether service is already added), round up taxi fares, and small notes for hotel staff are standard.
