Guatemala — Transport & Getting Around

In Guatemala City use Uber (cheap, widely available, safer than street taxis) or radio taxis called by your hotel; avoid the red camioneta buses, which see frequent armed robbery, and ride the Transmetro BRT only in daylight. Uber also works in Antigua. Intercity travel for visitors runs on tourist shuttles (Antigua, Lake Atitlán and airport circuits, roughly US 0-25 a leg) and first-class coach lines — not chicken buses with luggage.

La Aurora airport (GUA) is inside Guatemala City in Zona 13, 20-30 minutes from the Zona 10 hotel district and about an hour from Antigua by pre-booked shuttle or Uber. TAG and Avianca fly Guatemala City-Flores (for Tikal) in under an hour, saving an 8-10 hour road trip.
