Guatemala — Currency & Money
The quetzal (GTQ) sits around 7.7-7.8 to the US dollar and is stable. Guatemala City hotels, malls and Zona 10 venues take cards, and Antigua is card-friendly; everywhere else assume cash, in small bills — 100-quetzal notes can be hard to break in markets. Use ATMs inside bank branches or shopping centres only (skimming and card-trapping are common) and decline dynamic currency conversion. US dollars are accepted at some tourist businesses at mediocre rates. Tipping: 10% in restaurants, sometimes pre-added as propina on tourist-area bills — check before doubling it.
