Guatemala runs a dedicated tourist-assistance service, PROATUR — dial 1500, 24/7, with English-speaking staff who mediate with police, translate and can escort; make it your first call for anything short of arrest, and dial 110 for the National Civil Police. If arrested you are entitled to a public defender (Instituto de la Defensa Pública Penal) and embassy notification — most Western embassies sit in or near Zona 10, and pretrial detention is long enough that engaging a lawyer within hours matters. Adult sex work itself is legal; the 2009 Ley contra la Violencia Sexual, Explotación y Trata (Decreto 9-2009) criminalises pimping and treats any commercial sex with under-18s as trafficking with severe sentences, and the post-2009 reforms put the effective age of consent at 18 — there is no legal grey zone involving minors here. The Zona 1 street scene is where that risk concentrates; stay away from it.
