Age of consent is 18. Sex work is criminalised under Law 10 of 1961, which punishes both selling and buying with up to three years' prison and a fine; hotel raids and "public morals" police stings do happen, particularly in Cairo. The same 1961 statute's "habitual debauchery" (fujur) clause is the tool routinely used to prosecute same-sex conduct, as in the 2001 Queen Boat case and repeated Grindr entrapment sweeps since.

Drug laws under Law 182 of 1960 are severe — mandatory life or death for trafficking, long custodial sentences for possession. If detained, refuse to sign any Arabic document you cannot read, ask for your embassy at once, and expect only welfare-check consular help, not release.
