Colombia — Scam Patterns & Local Risks

Colombia's adult tourism scene has matured but scams have evolved with it. Drink-spiking with scopolamine ("devil's breath") is the most distinctive and dangerous risk.

Documented Patterns (4)

high Drink spiking · Medellín

Scopolamine ("devil's breath") in Parque Lleras

Documented criminal pattern: a beautiful woman invites you for a drink, slips scopolamine into the drink, you spend the next 12 hours in a compliant fog handing over PINs and unlocking apartments. Multiple US/UK deaths annually.

Mitigation: NEVER accept a drink you didn't see poured. NEVER go to a private apartment with someone you just met; insist on hotel-room-only first meetings.

high Extortion

Underage entrapment in Cartagena

Reports of organised groups bringing girls who claim to be 18, then "father" or "police" arrive demanding extortion settlements.

Mitigation: See ID before any contact; if it looks like a setup, leave; the floor is 18.

high Fake police · Bogotá

Fake "Migración" stops

Plain-clothes "officers" demand to inspect passport and "fines" for unregistered visa.

Mitigation: Real Migración Colombia operate from offices; never on-the-street demands. Demand to be taken to a station.

medium Card skimming

Card cloning at restaurants

Servers take cards out of sight to clone before charging. Affects tourist-zone restaurants and bars.

Mitigation: Use cash; if you must use card, watch the terminal at all times.
