Bulgaria — Transport & Getting Around

Sofia's four-line metro is the fastest way around, with contactless bank-card payment at the gates and fares around EUR 0.80 since the switch to the euro; trams and buses share the ticketing system. Ride-hailing with private drivers is banned, so there are no Uber or Bolt rides — use the TaxiMe app or order a licensed company by phone. Hailing on the street, especially near the station and airport, risks lookalike taxis running clone liveries and rigged meters. The metro runs directly from Sofia Airport Terminal 2 to the centre in about 20 minutes.

Sofia-Varna and Sofia-Burgas domestic flights (Bulgaria Air, roughly 50 minutes) beat the 6-7 hour drive to the Black Sea in summer. Intercity buses and trains are cheap but slow; in the coastal resorts (Sunny Beach, Golden Sands) taxi meter scams are endemic — check the tariff card on the window before getting in.
