EU/UK visitors can use EHIC/GHIC in the state system, but Bulgarian public hospitals are underfunded and private clinics — which insurers routinely work with — are the practical option, so carry proper travel insurance. Policies generally exclude incidents arising from heavy intoxication, which is exactly how most Sunny Beach claims arise.

Regional health inspectorates run KABKIS cabinets — free, anonymous HIV and STI counselling and testing — in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and other cities, and private laboratories offer cheap same-day STI panels without referral. For PEP after a high-risk exposure, go to an infectious-disease hospital or a major private clinic within 72 hours; availability outside Sofia is patchy.
