Austria — Insurance

EU/EEA visitors are covered by EHIC/GHIC for emergency public treatment; non-Europeans should carry travel insurance with medical evacuation cover, as private Austrian care is expensive and public hospitals will bill uninsured foreigners at cost. Check that your policy does not exclude alcohol-related injury or activities you actually plan to do.

Confidential STI and HIV testing is available through municipal STD outpatient clinics (STD-Ambulatorium) in Vienna and other capitals, generally free or at nominal cost regardless of insurance status. Aids Hilfe Wien and the wider Aids Hilfe network offer anonymous rapid HIV testing, PEP referrals and counselling; PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure and is available through hospital emergency departments.
