Austria — Currency & Money
Currency is the Euro (EUR). Cards — including contactless and Apple/Google Pay — are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, chain retailers and larger venues, but Austria remains notably cash-heavy: many Beisl (traditional pubs), small cafés, taxis outside Vienna and some licensed brothels are cash-only or add a card surcharge. Bank-operated Bankomat ATMs (Erste, Bank Austria, BAWAG, Raiffeisen) are free with most foreign cards; the ubiquitous blue Euronet machines charge EUR 4–7 per withdrawal and offer poor DCC rates — decline conversion.
Tipping is modest — round up or add 5–10% in restaurants, given directly to the server rather than left on the table.
