Sydney CBD and Kings Cross strip-club bar tabs
Touts around George Street, Pitt Street and the remaining Kings Cross strip venues pull visitors into 'free entry' clubs where hostesses order rounds of champagne or 'sit-down' drinks that are itemised at hundreds of dollars, with tabs of AU$2,000-5,000 pushed through the terminal before you see a menu.
Mitigation: Refuse any venue where a street promoter walks you in, and demand a printed drinks list with prices before ordering anything or letting a hostess sit with you.
Bank-transfer or gift-card 'deposits' for outcalls that never arrive
Fake profiles on Locanto, Skokka and Telegram ask for a AU$100-300 deposit via Osko/PayID, Bitcoin or Coles/Woolworths gift cards to 'secure' an outcall to your hotel, then block you or invent an Uber fee, driver fee and security fee in escalating requests.
Mitigation: Never send any pre-payment to a private escort you have not met; legitimate Australian providers and licensed brothels take payment in cash on arrival.
Sextortion via Snapchat, Tinder and 'sugar baby' DMs
Scammers posing as young Australian women move a chat off Tinder, Hinge or Instagram to Snapchat or WhatsApp, coax an explicit video, then demand payment in cryptocurrency or PayID under threat of sending the clip to your LinkedIn contacts or family, often with a fake AFP or eSafety Commissioner letter attached.
Mitigation: Never send nude video to anyone you have not met in person; if targeted, stop paying immediately and report to ReportCyber (cyber.gov.au) - payment only escalates demands.
Escort-directory photo swaps on Scarlet Blue and similar sites
Private escorts advertising on Australian directories frequently use heavily filtered, years-old or outright stolen photos, and the person who arrives at a Melbourne or Sydney hotel outcall often looks materially different from the profile, with no refund once she is at the door.
Mitigation: Request a same-day verification selfie holding a specific gesture, and reverse-image-search the profile pictures before booking.
Fake 'AFP' or immigration calls after adult-site visits
Callers claiming to be Australian Federal Police, ATO or Department of Home Affairs tell tourists their passport or visa is linked to an adult-site or escort transaction and demand payment in gift cards, cryptocurrency or bank transfer to avoid arrest at the airport.
Mitigation: Hang up - no Australian government agency demands payment by phone or in gift cards; verify by calling the agency's published number, not a number the caller gives you.
Drink spiking and card-skim robberies around Kings Cross and Fortitude Valley
Isolated reports continue from Kings Cross, Darlinghurst and Brisbane's Fortitude Valley of drinks being spiked at unlicensed after-hours venues and private 'party' apartments, with victims waking to maxed-out cards, drained bank accounts via PayID and missing phones.
Mitigation: Keep your drink in sight, use tap-to-pay with a low daily limit rather than handing over a card, and enable transaction alerts before a night out.
