Sex work between consenting adults is fully decriminalised under the Prostitution Reform Act 2003, with a minimum age of 18 for sex workers and clients. The general age of consent is 16 (Crimes Act 1961). Street work is legal but restricted by local bylaws in parts of Auckland and Christchurch. Holders of temporary visas cannot legally work in the industry.

If detained, you have the right to a lawyer and to contact your embassy — consulates issue emergency passports and provide lawyer lists but won't pay fines or fees. Drugs fall under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975; Police have discretion under the 2019 amendment to divert personal possession to health services, but Class A supply carries life imprisonment.
