Ecuador uses the US dollar outright — no exchange needed for Americans. Small bills are essential: many shops and taxis cannot break a 0, and $50/ 00 notes are widely refused over counterfeit fears; coins circulate heavily. ATMs cap withdrawals around US$300-500 per transaction — use machines inside bank branches or malls, as skimming is common. Cards work in hotels, malls and chain restaurants; everything else is cash. Restaurants usually add 10% service; small extra tips are appreciated but not expected, and taxis are just rounded up.
