I have visited Portugal three times and wanted to share thoughts on the best areas.

Main Scene Area:
The primary area is the tourist entertainment zone. Highest concentration of venues and freelancers. Well-lit, busy, and generally safe.

Alternative Areas:
Local areas have options but only for experienced visitors.

Areas to Avoid:
Some budget accommodation areas attract a rough crowd.

Accommodation:
Mid-range hotels close to the action work best.

Hope this helps anyone planning their first visit.

Spot on with the prices. That matches what I paid in February.

Good info. I'd add that going during the week is much better — less crowded, better prices.

This is outdated info IMO. Things have changed since the pandemic. Current prices are about the same than what's described here.

Adding my experience from last month.

The scene has stayed the same since pre-COVID. Biggest change: prices up 20%.
